January 13, 2025

To the Parents / Guardians / Caregivers of École Laura Secord School,

SAVE THE DATE - The Anxious Generation with Matt Henderson (WSD Chief Superintendent)

Wednesday, January 22nd (Lynx Gym – 6:00 – 7:30 pm)

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, École Laura Secord School will be hosting Winnipeg School Division Chief Superintendent Matt Henderson for an evening to learn about and discuss the impact of smartphones, social media and screens on our children’s mental, emotional, and social development.

Jonathan Haidt’s book, “The Anxious Generation:  How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illnesswas provided to all school administrators in Winnipeg School Division. Representatives from ELSS Parent Council have read the book, and along with school administration would like to share information, lead discussion and plan actions related to this important topic.

The evening will include an overview of the research shared in this book and will highlight some key action items proposed for schools and parents, along with a presentation of some actions already being taken or considered by the school community.

Then, parents and community members will have the opportunity to discuss these action items and propose additional actions for the school and community.

Attendees will leave with resources, ideas to consider, and a stronger sense of agency with respect to phones, screens and social media in their family units and peer network.

To learn more about this research and suggested action items in advance of the session, read "The Anxious Generation", consider the discussion questions, visit "The Anxious Generation" website, review the parent/family resources, or listen to relevant podcast episodes. Additionally, this article  by Roland Paulsen contains information offering another perspective on Haidt's research and this topic.

Book club kits with 5 copies of “The Anxious Generation”, discussion questions, and family commitments will also be available for parents to borrow in small groups so they can discuss this critical issue in greater depth with their communities. These are available in the Ecole Laura Secord School office starting Friday, January 10, 2025. Parents can take out one copy, or a book club kit (5 books). Please email kaleighquinn@gmail.com with any questions.

Please RSVP so we can ensure enough space (and potential childcare) to accommodate attending participants.

Thank you!

Wade Gregg, Principal
