October 21, 2024
Volunteer students and teachers welcomed students to the Career Expo.

The Fall Career Expo, held on October 17 at R.B. Russell Vocational School, was a resounding success. The event connected Winnipeg School Division students with the community to discover and consider future opportunities that will shape their futures.

Sylvia Martin, Divisional Principal of Career Lab, expressed her enthusiasm for the event's success. "The WSD Fall Career Expo brought together students from 14 WSD schools in a collaborative effort to explore educational and career pathways," Martin said.

"Hosted by RB Russell, the event featured over 100 booths, where exhibitors were thrilled by the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by our students. We hope this excitement continues in the classroom, inspiring further learning and encouraging students to explore their future opportunities."

The expo showcased a diverse range of career options, allowing students to actively connect with industry professionals and take their first steps toward a bright future.

Among the many organizations present was New Media Manitoba, represented by Senior Manager Jonathan Lê. Lê shared his positive experience at the event: "New Media Manitoba was thrilled to participate in WSD's Fall Career Expo at RB Russell. Organizing an event of this scale is no small thing, and all the logistics were planned perfectly."

He added, "It was a huge win for our organization to be among many exhibitors presenting such a diversity of career options for the students. The best part was connecting with many engaged students who were starting to plan their career pathways. It was a busy but very inspiring day for us."

The expo also welcomed representatives from post-secondary institutions, including Red River College Polytechnic (RRC Polytechnic). Wade Parke, Indigenous Student Recruiter at RRC Polytechnic, described the experience as "wonderful" and highlighted the importance of community engagement. "We're trying to bring the Red River College into the community," Gregg explained. "We appreciate the relationship we're developing with R.B. Russell and the Winnipeg School Division. It's grassroots education, and we're trying to push that initiative forward."

Parke emphasized RRC Polytechnic's forward-thinking approach to education, which aligns well with the expo's goal of preparing students for future careers. "Our motto is that we're ahead of what will be coming. So, we train for the future; students who come to RRC will get training that will prepare them not only for the present day but for the future," he said.

The Fall Career Expo was a crucial platform for students to gain insights into various career paths and educational opportunities. By bringing together a wide array of organizations and institutions, the event gave attendees a comprehensive view of the possibilities that await them after graduation.

As students explored the booths and engaged with exhibitors, they gathered valuable information about different industries, required skills, and educational pathways.

R.B. Russell Vocational School student Cory Flett said," I went to almost every table and loved the information shared by the exhibitors."

Another R.B. Russell student, Lucius McIvor, mentioned, "There were many learning opportunities and much to explore."

The Fall Career Expo also featured a Career Fair Scavenger Hunt, which provided students with a fun and interactive way to explore different areas of interest.

The success of the Fall Career Expo highlights Winnipeg School Division's commitment to preparing students for their future. By providing such opportunities, WSD equips students with the knowledge and connections needed to make informed career and education decisions.

The enthusiasm and engagement displayed by students and exhibitors suggest that this annual event will continue to play a crucial role in shaping Winnipeg's future workforce. Here are some more photos from the event:
