EAL (English as an Additional Language)

These courses are specifically designed to meet the needs of students whose first language is not English. Students are assessed upon arrival and progress through the EAL program at the pace that is most beneficial for each student.
LITERACY CENTRE
The Literacy Centre is designed for newcomer students who are learning the language of instruction and who also have limited formal schooling. They are developing language and literacy along with foundational academic knowledge and skills.
NUMERACY
Mathematics is also a key component of the LAL program. The NUMY1 and NUMY2 courses focus on foundational mathematical skills and knowledge, including those necessary skills that are required for problem solving in real life situations. Students build upon language and math and develop both practical applications and prerequisite skills for further studies in math.
STAGE 1 EAL
In Stage 1, students are learning to use words, short phrases, and memorized expressions to communicate in structured and familiar contexts. They are beginning to read and produce short, simple texts based on previously taught language, with a focus on learning the vocabulary needed for daily life.
STAGE 2 EAL
In Stage 2, students are learning to use short phrases and sentences to communicate clearly in routine personal and classroom interactions. They are learning to read simple texts containing several connected ideas, produce comprehensible written sentences, and use some academic language to complete school tasks.
STAGE 3 EAL
In Stage 3, students are learning to communicate clearly in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar social and classroom contexts that are longer and more complex. They are learning to read and produce texts of several paragraphs that use more complex structures and vocabulary.
ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS
This English course is specifically designed to enable students to advance their skills in interpreting and comprehending content area reading and writing using the following
strands: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing. Students will interact and communicate with curriculum drawn from past and current issues. It is strongly recommended that all EAL students register for this course. This is an excellent course for students who want to pursue mainstream English courses or EAL students preparing to graduate.
READING IS THINKING
This course is designed to support EAL students to become proficient in their reading, writing and speaking through the use of a variety of materials. Reading is Thinking focuses on addressing areas of difficulty and building on previously learned knowledge.
EAL SCIENCE
This course is designed for EAL students at a Stage 2 level. There is flexibility in the program and topics may include: motion and energy (physics), properties and interactions between matter (chemistry), the cell and body systems (biology), and weather dynamics. Other topics may also be studied in this program. Students will be given opportunities for practical experiences in the sciences. Assessment will mainly be in the form of assignments, projects, quizzes and lab work.
EAL MATH
The focus of these courses is on integrating math and related language skills with emphasis on basic arithmetic skills and problem solving. Individualized instruction is emphasized and re- enforced on a regular basis with individualized computer lessons and small group work.
EAL GEOGRAPHY
The course is a study of the geography of Canada and its regions, with an emphasis on the Prairies, Manitoba and Winnipeg. Topics of study are tailored to Newcomer students and focus on geography skills and language development through reading, writing, mapping, graphing and the use of visual materials, hands-on activities and field trips.
EAL HISTORY
Topics include a brief overview of pre-confederation Canada, Native peoples of Canada, pre-European contact, explorers, New France, and British-French conflict and a more detailed study of Confederation to present time. The aim of the course is to prepare Newcomer students for citizenship as well as to develop language and literacy in English.
