Esports Team Triumphs

A big congratulations to DMCI’s Esports team for winning the AAA Senior Years Rocket League Provincial Championship, and to Jayden for winning the SuperSmash Bros Championship!

Many are not too familiar with esports, since it is a relatively new extracurricular. So what is esports? They are traditional sport video games played throughout the school year, and they compete against other schools around the province. They play games remotely, online, at home, and together at school. 

In an interview with the coach, Mr. Trieu, he detailed what goes on before the competition even starts. He states that it is a lot of work from an organizing perspective and he wants to make the event fun for everyone. As a coach, he is nervous about the competition, but the main thing for him is that the club members are competing as a team. This is one of the bigger events hosted for esports, since they played against the Top 24 schools in Manitoba.

Students had different ways of preparing for the competition depending on what game they played. Practice took place at school and at home. All that training definitely paid off!

We had the opportunity to gather responses from two of the team captains, Rance C. and Jayden R. Rance plays Rocket League, and Jayden plays Super Smash Bros. When asked about how they felt about the tournament, Rance responded saying, “I was nervous to play the games at first but found myself getting into the rhythm and having fun from start to finish,” and Jayden said, “I think it went well, and I’m not just saying that cause I won. This is probably the highest scale events for Esports DMCI will have for the rest of the year. There was so much effort into making this event great and it all paid off.” Both students said they both value their teammates and how close they all are with each other.

With this win, hopefully students are more encouraged to join and continue the DMCI legacy!
