From Passion to Profit at DMCI

DMCI students have always shown an entrepreneurial spirit. Their businesses act as an extra source of income, and a chance to gain experience, which can help with future careers. Daniel Mac offers many classes that teach students how to start and run a business, such as Personal Finance and Entrepreneurship.

We interviewed four student-run business owners to highlight their unique experiences:

Kuri Beauty has been in operation since August 2023 and is individually run by DMCI student Rheana J. This home-based certified lash studio that offers customized lash extensions fit for anything the customer desires.

Knotsbymae run by sisters, Jonamie T. and Mae T., offers homemade crochet items. Each item has a unique personal touch.

Nails x Mae is another home-based business run by Loramae J., which has been operating since 2021. The business sells affordable custom or premade press-on nails.

Chaestudio is a business run by Chelsea F. that sells sets of handmade accessories such as bracelets and phone charms. She also accepts custom orders. This business is currently on hiatus (as of February 2025), but was previously run for 1½ years.

In order to successfully run a business, these DMCI entrepreneurs had to learn how to balance their businesses alongside the rest of their responsibilities. Courses offered at DMCI such as Personal Finance and Entrepreneurship prepare students by teaching the skills needed to make wise business decisions. The student owners took the initiative to develop their skills by watching YouTube tutorials, researching educational resources, and reaching out to experienced educators and similar businesses for advice.

Challenges are a natural part of any entrepreneurial journey. Business is cyclical, with highs and lows—a concept often explored in DMCI’s business classes. Slow orders or unsatisfying products aren’t setbacks but opportunities for growth. Staying motivated means building healthy habits, like staying organized, finding support, and consistently practicing your craft. Embracing the ups and downs builds resilience and prepares you for future success.

Starting your own business can be scary at first, but these four students have given great advice. You shouldn’t be afraid to learn new things and get creative. Don’t shy away from promoting your business and taking breaks when you need to. Most importantly, don’t lose faith in yourself and just go for it!

Running a business as a student takes a lot of commitment and time management in order to thrive. If you can balance these things in a healthy manner you should be set. Business skills taught at DMCI can be applied to real life and can extend beyond graduation. We hope this article has encouraged you to support some of the student-run businesses around the school and given you the encouragement to potentially start your own!
