Grade 5/6 - Ms. Rocha - Room 203

September 13, 2024

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year. My name is Christina Rocha and I will be your child’s classroom teacher this year. I look forward to getting to know you and your child as we go through this learning journey together. My goal is to help create a learning environment for students to inquire and explore new things.

Our classroom is a safe learning environment where we follow Pinkham School’s C.A.R.E. principles.

  • Come prepared to learn
  • Actively listening
  • Ready to participate and inquire
  • Everybody belongs

Subject Areas

Indigenous Perspectives will be integrated throughout all subject areas using literature, art, history, and stories during the school year. We will also be infusing different aspects of the arts curriculum, such as visual arts and drama within different subject areas.

English Language Arts - Students will take part in various reading and writing learning activities throughout the day. We will be working on building language skills such as listening, speaking, viewing, writing, and reading throughout the year. Students will also be participating in various word study activities as well as several whole class novel studies. Students are encouraged to read daily at home as it provides the opportunity for students to work on their language skills as well as an opportunity for you to be more involved in your child’s learning.

Math - Students will be exploring several different topics in math this year focusing on the strands of Number Sense, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability. Students will be using the methods of building thinking classrooms, mental math, problem solving, and hands-on manipulation throughout their mathematical exploration.

Social Studies - Through inquiry and investigation, students will acquire a greater knowledge and understanding of Canadian history and how this history helped to shape our lives as Canadian’s today.

Science & Health - Through inquiry and research, students will be able to identify practical problems and determine various methods to solve them. For Health, we will be exploring the Second Step Program, Family Life, and social-emotional learning. Students will develop the skills needed to manage and express their feelings in positive ways. Students will also have opportunities for mindfulness throughout the day.

Assessment

Ongoing assessment will be taking place within the classroom throughout the school year through daily class learning, observation, and discussion. These assessments help to evaluate each student’s strengths and helps to determine the next steps for their learning.

The intent of each activity, as well as the criteria, will be made clear to the students to help ensure they are aware of what they need to do to be successful learners.

Classroom Expectations

It is expected that students will be respectful to classmates, staff, and school property. Students in room 203 will have many opportunities to work as a team during different learning tasks as well as the opportunity to be a role model for younger students through learning buddies.

There will also be a zero tolerance policy in our classroom for violence or bullying against other students.

Attendance is crucial in your child’s success at school. Please ensure that your child comes to school each day, and on time. If your child cannot attend school for any reason or will be late, please notify the school as soon as possible.

Students will use Seesaw to document their learning throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to create their own learning portfolios that can be used to share their learning.
