Language Arts

Reading and writing is an important part of the curriculum. Our goal is to create lifelong readers and writers. These are some of the things we do at school every day:

Reading Groups provides students with small learning groups that focuses on the strengths and needs of each individual student. Students spend an extended amount of time reading texts that interest them, and are provided with opportunities to talk about literature.

Writer’s Workshop builds students skills and confidence as writers. Students will receive direct writing instruction daily. Students write about their own lives or what they know, they will work in authentic ways, they will share their work with their peers, and they will develop independence as writers.

Read Aloud (Story Time)

We read great quality literature not only for pleasure, but to help develop language and a love of reading in our students.

Technology

Students access technology in school by using Epic Books. I will be giving out their log in codes so they can access the learning platform at home.

Mathematics

Students will develop basic skills and strategies to solve problems and will learn how to communicate mathematically.

These are some of the things we do on a weekly basis:

Counting Collections

Number Talks

Thinking Classrooms

Rote Counting

Dreambox

In Pinkham, we try our best to incorporate Indigenous Education in different areas of learning both for students and teachers. We use different Indigenous texts, videos and integrate outdoor classroom to gain familiarity with the Indigenous culture. As a way to answer the call for Truth and Reconciliation.

Home involvement is crucial in the primary years. Practicing math facts and reading and writing daily helps to increase skill development in all curricular areas! If you require any more guidance on how to best support your child at home, please see me!

If you have any concerns or questions, please call the school at 204-786-5749.
Looking forward to learning with your child and your family.
