Room 138

September 13, 2024

Welcome to Room 138!

My name is Reetu Kalsi, and I am currently teaching grade 5 and 6. I believe that every child is unique and learns at a different pace. Instruction and activities are designed so each child can be successful with their learning.

In our classroom, we have the right and responsibility to:

  • be safe
  • be respected and respectful of others
  • be helpful
  • be the best learners that we can be

There will be a focus throughout the year on reading aloud. independent reading, oral discussion of literature, guided reading, reading response, writing activities (which includes story writing, persuasive and poetry writing, inquiry / research projects, informational writing), spelling, daily edit, and vocabulary practice. Another important component of language arts is listening and speaking. The ability to listen for information and directions is crucial to learning. We are also working on showing respect and using good social skills during morning meetings as the students are expected to demonstrate active listening and raise their hands to ask questions. To help students develop their reading skills we will be focusing on the development of reading strategies. These include making predictions about unknown words by thinking about what would make sense, looking for familiar small words in big words (e.g. go in going), using rhyming words and looking at the illustrations to help figure out an unknown word.

The students will develop a variety of mental math strategies for addition, subtraction multiplication and division. Some of the ideas related to the 4 strands include number operations, polygon and 3-D solids, measurement, graphs extending patterns, number sense, fractions and decimals. Problem solving strategies are linked to all areas. In teaching math, a variety of strategies like counters, blocks, games and many more are used to make learning meaningful.

In addition, students will actively engage in inquiry and investigation through the integration of various subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, and health.

Assessment will be done in a number of ways through daily assignments, observation, discussion and written response, rubrics, one on one conference with teacher and students sample work.
